Happy Independence Day Gabon

17 August

Gabon Independence Day is celebrated on August 17 annually. Gabon Independence Day is marks the establishment of an independent country when, after more than a century, Gabon claimed its liberation from France.

On this day, locals hold festivities, concerts, parades, and firework displays as a reminder of this freedom. It’s also a day to educate the younger generation and pass on the rich history of their country to make the feeling of freedom come alive. To pay respect to their country’s Independence Day commemoration, all the commercial and administrative establishments are kept shut.

The Portuguese, led by their navigator, Diego Cam, were the first European settlers in Gabon, arriving in 1472. They named the place ‘Gabon’ after the Portuguese term ‘Gabão’ which means ‘cloak.’ Interestingly, the opening of the Como River was also called ‘Rio do Gabao’ or simply ‘Gabao.’ The Portuguese established sugar plantations and developed trade on the mainland. Their trade thrived and spread to most European nations. By the late 1500s, the Dutch, English, French, and Spanish competitors also started trading alcohol, cloth, firearms, and iron goods for ivory, hardwood, and slaves. This slave trade caught the attention of the French colonists, which ultimately became the catalyst for their century-long rule in Gabon.

In 1839, the local ruler in Gabon signed the sovereignty away and granted permission to France to rule the nation. In 1875, a French explorer named Pierre Savorgnan de Brazza started his expedition to Gabon, and in the meantime, he also founded Franceville, one of the largest cities in the country. Gabon officially became a French colony in 1885, and finally one of the four colonies in French Equatorial Africa in 1910.

The French rule faced minor resistance from the citizens of Gabon. However, the forced labor and labor taxes for public health led to considerable interference from the public. Years later, an elite group was formed to promote a ‘pro-French’ but ‘anti-colonialist’ movement. The members of this group went on to become politicians during the Fourth French Republic from 1946 to 1958 when Gabon became an overseas territory of France, but with its own representation and assembly. In 1958, Gabon became an autonomous republic of France. Finally, on August 17, 1960, after a series of multiple cooperation agreements, Gabon was granted complete independence and sovereignty.

South Africa established full diplomatic relations with the Republic of Gabon on 15 October 1992.

During 2020, South Africa had a large net trade with Gabon in the exports of Transportation ($9.76M), Machines ($7.62M), and Foodstuffs ($3.72M). During 2020, Gabon had a large net trade with South Africa in the exports of Wood Products ($2.71M), Vegetable Products ($112k), and Transportation ($9.07k).

The Diplomatic Informer Magazine wishes to congratulate the Government and the people of Gabon on the occasion of the anniversary of the independence day.

Happy Independence Day Indonesia

17 August 2022

The Diplomatic Informer Magazine wishes to congratulate the Government and the people of Indonesia on the occasion of the anniversary of the independence day.

We sincerely wish the Government & the people of Indonesia continued unity, peace and increased prosperity.

17th August is Indonesia’s national day and marks Indonesia’s declaration of independence from the Netherlands in 1945.

Indonesia had been a Dutch colony for over 300 years when a group of revolutionaries declared independence on 17 August 1945.

It took Indonesians four years of diplomacy and armed struggle before their independence was formally granted by Queen Juliana of the Netherlands.

Despite the granting of independence in 1945, it wasn’t until 2005, that the Netherlands declared that they had decided to accept the date of 17 August 1945 as the date of Indonesia’s independence.

Indonesia is an archipelago of over 17,000 beautiful islands. It is the world’s fourth most populous country. More than half of Indonesia’s population live on Java, making it the world’s most populous island.

Indonesia and South Africa established diplomatic relations in August 1994. The South African Embassy in Jakarta was established in January 1995, and Indonesia opened its embassy in Pretoria in 1995. Both nations are members of the World Trade Organization (WTO) and G-20 major economies. In 2012, during a briefing on Foreign Policy initiatives for 2012, Indonesia named South Africa amongst its 14 strategic partners.

Political relations

SA-Indonesia relations go back more than 350 years – when the first people of Indonesian descent arrived in the Cape in the mid-1600s. Starting with the Bandung Conference of 1955 (which was attended, on behalf of the ANC by Moses Kotane and Maulvi Cachalia), Indonesia became one of the fiercest critics of apartheid and supported the anti-apartheid struggle throughout.

Efforts to rekindle the spirit of Bandung through enhancing cooperation between the countries of Asia and Africa were jointly initiated in 2002 and Indonesia and South Africa hosted the first Asian-African Sub-Regional Organizations Conference (AASROC I) and the second AASROC (AASROC II) respectively in Bandung, Indonesia in 2003 and in Durban, South Africa in 2004.

These events were important milestones in preparation for the Asian-African Summit in Indonesia in 2005, which was held in conjunction with the commemoration of the Golden Jubilee of the 1955 Asian-African Conference. In 1995, the New Asia Africa Strategic Partnership (NAASP) was established with SA and Indonesia as the co-chairs.

Deputy President Cyril Ramophosa represented President Jacob Zuma; during the 60th Anniversary of the Asia Africa Bandung Conference with the theme “Strengthening South-South Cooperation to Promote World Peace and Prosperity” & the 10th Anniversary Celebrations of the New Asian-African Strategic Partnership Summit Meeting respectively held in Jakarta and Bandung from 19 – 24 April 2015.

Furthermore; the Indonesian Government; through the Indonesian Chamber of Commerce & Industry (locally referred to as KADIN) hosted the first Asia – Africa Business Summit on 21 April 2015 with the theme of “Realization of Asia-Africa Partnership for Progress and Prosperity”. Deputy President Cyril Ramophosa addressed the Asia – Africa Business Summit which culminated on the decision for the formation of the Asia – Africa Business Council.

Happy Independence Day Liechtenstein

15 August 2022

Celebrating Liechtenstein’s National Day on August 15, The Diplomatic Informer Magazine wishes to congratulate the Government and the people of Liechtenstein on the occasion of anniversary of the independence day.

We sincerely wish the Government & the people of  Liechtenstein continued unity, peace and increased prosperity.

On 5 August 1940 the government of the Principality of Liechtenstein officially declared August 15 to be the country’s national holiday. Just ten days later it was celebrated for the first time.

There were two reasons for choosing the date. Firstly, it was already a bank holiday. The Assumption of Mary is celebrated on August 15. Secondly, the ruling Prince at the time, Prince Franz Josef II, was born on August 16. Therefore, Liechtenstein’s national holiday was created by combining the Feast of the Assumption and the Prince’s birthday.

After the death of Prince Franz Josef II in 1989 it was decided to keep the national holiday on the same day. In 1990 a law was passed establishing August 15 as the official national holiday of the Principality of Liechtenstein.

The country that lies in the European Alps, between Austria and Switzerland, was liberated from German rule on August 15, 1866.

Liechtenstein is a German-speaking, 25km-long principality between Austria and Switzerland. It’s known for its medieval castles, alpine landscapes and villages linked by a network of trails.

The capital, Vaduz, a cultural and financial center, is home to Kunstmuseum Liechtenstein, with galleries of modern and contemporary art.

Happy Independence Day Congo

15 August 2022

The Republic of Congo got its freedom from France. The French Congo occupied the largest city of Congo, Brazzaville on 10 September 1880. The French formally established themselves in Congo on 30 November 1882.

Abbé Fulbert Youlou, a laicized Brazzaville-Congolese Roman Catholic priest, became the first President of the Republic of the Congo on its independence. He resigned on 15 August 1963 after an uprising.

Abbé Fulbert Youlou imposed a single party system and imprisoned union leaders in August 1963. He had to resign following opposition in the governance in 1964.
