The Meeting of the #BRICS grouping is being held under this year’s theme for India’s Chairship: BRICS@15: Intra BRICS Cooperation for Continuity, Consolidation, and Consensus’. India is chairing the meeting for the third time, after it did so in 2012 and 2016.
Having first convened in 2006 as BRIC for the Ministerial Meeting and the first summit held in 2009, the BRIC became BRICS in 2010 with South Africa joining as a full member country. #BRICS comprises five of the world’s largest developing countries, which represent 41% of the global population, 24% of the global GDP and 16% of the global trade.
It is expected that today’s meeting will deliberate on ways to deal with the #COVID19 pandemic, global and regional issues of concern, sustainable development, and terrorism. The Ministerial Meeting will adopt a media statement as well as a stand-alone Joint Statement on Strengthening and Reforming the Multilateral System.
