UNITED NATIONS SECRETARY-GENERAL ANTÓNIO GUTERRES IS IN MOSCOW

26 April 2022

United Nations Secretary-General is currently in Moscow, Russia,  to discuss with the Russians on ceasefire possibilities.

The UN Secretary-General said he is seeking peace and nothing else but lasting peace. Before proceeding to Kiev, Ukraine on the same mission, he will have an audience with Russia’s President, Vladimir Putin. He admitted that there are two narratives on the ground but asked the two parties to return to the discussion table.

Russia’s Foreign Minister, Sergey Lavrov said the special military operation was ignited by the deliberate carelessness of the Kiev administration to undermine the Minsk agreement and NATO’S disregard for Russia’s security. Lavrov said the west tricked the former Soviet Union by breaking promises made at the end of the cold war in 1989-1990 that Nato would not expand to the east.

Guterres also said Africa needs strong representation at key UN platforms including the UN Security Council and that’s one of the key reforms the UN should undergo in the coming years.
