The State of Palestine honoured H.E. Minister Dr. Naledi Pandor with the prestigious Grand Star of the Order of Jerusalem, at Freedom Park, Pretoria, where Minister Pandor was decorated by H.E. Ambassador Hanan Jarrar with honour on behalf of H.E. Dr. Mahmoud Abbas, President of the State of Palestine.
The Grand Star is the second-highest level of this Order and can be awarded by the order of the Palestinian President to Heads of Governments, Ministers, Envoys, Leaders of Parliaments and Parties, and those of similar standing.
Dr. Pandor is the third recipient worldwide to be honoured with the decoration.
Ambassador Jarrar said what Minister Pandor has done is to take her beliefs, experience, energy, and passion as a grassroots activist into the UN Security Council and the African Union and speak truth to power in these hallowed chambers, chambers which have been heavily weighted against the Palestinians at times.
Describing many Israeli atrocities against Palestinians in her closing speech, Minister Pandor said “South Africa joins a chorus of voices calling for an end to the brutal practice of home demolitions, and forced evictions. As I say this, We are not anti-Semitic, we are not discriminatory or racist to people of Jewish origin, but we can not accept the oppression of the Palestinian people”.
The ceremony was attended by about 250 guests and Minister Pandor lamented, “I am happy so many from the international community are here, all of us must act, if the world acts as one, we will effect change”.
