UNIVERSITY OF PRETORIA LAUNCHES ITS AFRICAN CENTRE FOR THE STUDY OF THE UNITED STATES

19 May 2022

Chargé d’Affaires Heather Merritt congratulated the University of Pretoria on the launch of its African Centre for the Study of the United States (ACSUS-UP) at a May 17 event , remarking, “There is a need for institutions that are focused on bringing expertise from both sides of the Atlantic together to find answers to our shared challenges and to find the opportunities that advance our shared prosperity. When we heard about the Center launching here at the University of Pretoria, we were excited because of the potential it has for responding to that need and expanding a vibrant partnership,”

ACSUS-UP is only the third such academic center of its kind on the African continent. Following American Language Centre (ALC) in Morocco and the African Centre for the Study of the United State (ACSUS-WITS). Professor Tawana Kupe, Vice Chancellor, and Professor Christopher Isike, Dept. of Political Science, view this as Africa engaging with the U.S. from a disadvantaged position, something the Centre will change, “The vision of the African Centre for the Study of the United States, University of Pretoria, is to be a top think-tank and premier African knowledge-creation hub in the field of studies of the United States and South African/African-US cooperation in the pursuit of regional integration, scientific enquiry, and global socio-economic and geopolitical change.”
