41ST SADC HEADS OF STATE AND GOVERNMENTS SUMMIT.

17 August 2021

President of the Republic of South Africa,  His Excellency, Mr. Cyril Ramaphosa arrived at Kamuzu International Airport to attend the 41st SADC Heads of State and Governments Summit. He was  welcomed by Honorable Gospel Kazako, Minister of Information.

South Africa is one of the world’s largest exporters of gold, platinum, and other natural resources, it also has the continent’s largest stock exchange.

During vusit His Excellency Dr. Lazarus McCarthy Chakwera and President Cyril Ramaphosa of the Republic of South Africa, held bilateral talks at Kamuzu Palace.

ZULU PEOPLE OUTSIDE SOUTH AFRICA

Malawian Zulus, called “Ngoni.” They speak and practice Zulu language and culture and trace their origins to KwaZulu Natal. We all know of Ndebele People (Zimbabwean Zulus), but Zulus are found throughout East Africa, in countries like Malawi, Zambia, Mozambique, even as far as Tanzania.

The Malawian Zulus/Ngoni, claim to have descended from Zulu exiles who fled Shaka KaSenzangakhona during The Zulu-Wars, also called the “Mfecane Period.”

The Zulus in Malawi were led by two leaders Ngwane Maseko and are settled in central Malawi (Ntcheu, Neno, Balaka, Mwanza and Dedza districts, as well as Bvumbwe in Thyolo district- others in Mocambique Thete region) and the other group was led by Zwangendaba and settled in Northern Malawi (Mzimba district- they have spread to Zambia too).

HAITI IN OUR PRAYERS!!!

Heavy damage and people trapped in rubble were reported in at least two cities.l

“Many houses fell. Many people are trapped under the rubble,” said Widchell Augustin, 35, from Les Cayes, where he lives. “We can hear people screaming under the rubble. People are running back-and-forth to the hospital.”

Haiti’s southern peninsula, the site of the Saturday quake, was hit hard by Hurricane Matthew in 2016 and, five years later, has still not fully recovered.

The quake could hardly have come at a worse time for the nation of 11 million, which has been in the throes of a political crisis since President Jovenel Moïse was assassinated on July 7.

CAPE TOWN INTERNATIONAL RANKED BEST AIRPORT IN AFRICA & HAVING THE BEST AIRPORT STAFF ON THE CONTINENT

by Nidha Narrandes

 13 August 2021

Three South African airports made it to the top 100 list of International airline consultancy group, Skytrax, 2021 World Airport Awards on August 5. Cape Town International topped the African nominees, and was placed 33 on the list – down from 23rd position last year. Another huge accolade for Cape Town was an award for having the best airport staff on the continent.

Next up, Durban’s King Shaka International Airport ranked at number 52 down from 32 in 2020 – the airport was also voted as the best regional airport in Africa.

OR Tambo International which ranked at number 36 last year moved to 54 this year.

Skytrax Awards are largely based on evaluations of traveller experiences – from all aspects of airports – check-ins, transfers, arrivals, departures, shopping, security, immigration, etc. The lack of travel due to COVID-19 was also taken into consideration, and the extra precautions in place because of the pandemic too.

“The 2021 World Airport Awards recognise the efforts of global airports in adapting and meeting the challenges of the COVID-19 pandemic. The past 18 months has been the most challenging and financially difficult period ever experienced by the world air transport industry, and airports have invested to provide the safest possible environment for their customers and staff during the global pandemic. COVID-19 has impacted some regions and airports more than others, with many areas having few, if any, international routes operating for more than a year,” the committee of the Skytrax Awards said in a statement.

Hamad International Airport in Doha, Qatar ranked the top international airport in the world, up from the third position in 2020.

Tokyo’s Haneda International took second place and Singapore’s Changi International lost their number one spot in 2020 to come in third this year.

CANADA ANNOUNCED NEW CONTRIBUTION TO GLOBAL VACCINATION EFFORTS

Global Affairs Canada

August 12, 2021 – Ottawa, Ontario – Global Affairs Canada

Vaccinating the world against COVID-19 is the best way of protecting everyone from COVID-19, because no one is safe until everyone is safe. The government and Canadians can make a difference together by helping to ensure that life-saving COVID-19 vaccines reach people regardless of where they live.

The Honourable Karina Gould, Minister of International Development, and the Honourable Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and Procurement, announced that Canada intends to donate up to 10 million doses of the Janssen vaccine, which were secured through an advance purchase agreement, to other countries through the COVID-19 Vaccine Global Access Facility (COVAX).

This would bring Canada’s total donations to the COVAX Facility to over 40 million doses. This is in addition to the $545 million Canada has committed to the COVAX Facility for vaccine procurement, distribution and delivery for low‑ and middle‑income countries through the COVAX Advance Market Commitment (AMC).

The doses will be managed by the COVAX Dose Sharing mechanism and would help accelerate deliveries to countries in the Caribbean and Latin America, while also helping priority countries in other regions.

This contribution is possible because of the government’s proactive approach to secure a supply of COVID-19 vaccine doses to meet Canada’s needs. Canada will continue to prioritize the delivery of potentially excess doses through the COVAX Facility, as well as exploring other dose sharing options, as needed, to ensure vaccines get to those in need.

Canada is also matching, dollar for dollar, donations made by individual Canadians to UNICEF Canada’s COVID-19 vaccination fundraising campaign, called “Give A Vax,” up to a maximum of $10 million. The matching fund campaign will run to September 6, 2021.

The announcement builds on Canada’s global efforts to fight COVID-19 around the world. Since the start of this crisis, Canada has committed more than $2.5 billion to support the global response to COVID-19, including $1.3 billion to the Access to COVID-19 Tools (ACT) Accelerator. Canada’s $1.3 billion contribution to the ACT-Accelerator, as part of the $2.5 billion that we have contributed to the global fight against the virus, is helping to provide 87 million vaccine doses to developing countries.

Quotes

“Vaccinating the world against COVID-19 continues to be the best strategy to end the pandemic. With every vaccination, we are one step closer to bringing this pandemic under control. Together, with Canada’s contributions and the generosity of Canadians, we can get COVID-19 under control.”

– Karina Gould, Minister of International Development

“With a stable supply of vaccines in Canada, we remain committed to doing our part to help protect the world’s citizens. This contribution of Janssen vaccines to COVAX will help to meet international needs and end this pandemic.”

– Anita Anand, Minister of Public Services and Procurement

Quick facts

The doses announced today are in addition to the 13 million doses announced by the Prime Minister at the G7 Summit on June 13, 2021, as well as the 17.7 million doses announced by Canada on July 12, 2021.

The distribution of Canada’s donated vaccines is expected to begin in the coming weeks, pending manufacturer delivery schedules.

On August 4, 2021, the Government of Canada announced that it will share over 82,000 doses of the AstraZeneca vaccine to Trinidad and Tobago via a bilateral agreement. These are doses that had already arrived in Canada, but are in excess of our domestic needs.

Currently, the COVAX Facility has an active portfolio, with advance purchase agreements for 11 vaccines and vaccine candidates and is on track to deliver over 1.8 billion doses of safe and effective COVID-19 vaccine worldwide by the end of the year. The goal is to have equitable access to 2 billion doses by the end of 2021
